Welcome

Rambler’s Blog – Alaskan Grandparenting 101 & Minde's Great Adventure July 8 - August 31, 2016

A word about this blog…. It has been our goal in recent years’ lengthier travels to record for posterity a diary of travel stats, pictures, and personal reflections. So, when we can no longer indulge in trains, planes and automobiles we may relive fond memories. We have invited a few friends and family to ride along through this travel blog (a combo of blather and log), risking exposure to bad puns, spelling errors and sore feet complaints.

This is our first trip to Alaska as Grandparents. We sure hope we do it right! There are majestic mountains and valleys, mighty glaciers and roaring rivers but they pale in comparison with the power of baby Dean. He has filled our hearts to bursting with love and makes us speak
gibberish. He is very patient with us and we're sure he thinks we're 'special' already.

Another first born, niece Minde from Buffalo, is joining us during our stay. She is celebrating high school graduation and taking a break before starting at Erie Community College in the fall. We have assured her parents, Wende and Pete, that we will take good care of her. She is already refusing to carry the bacon on hikes. Way smarter than us!

We will blog off and on. You are welcome to join us as you will. Glad to know you're out there!

August 25

We wake to rain yet again. Thinking of the old rhyme, rain, rain go away come again some other day. State Fair opens today, but decided to wait till tomorrow to go, as it is supposed to be sunny and 72 degrees.  Dean is wide awake and raring to go.  We babysit while Brenna runs errands.  Dean has us wound around his little finger, he whimpers and he gets picked up.  Hard to resist.  We try to avoid eye contact but he giggles at us and we are putty in his hands. As we reach down to rescue him from his bed he wiggles all over with joy.  Sorry Mom and Dad he is irresistible when he smiles at us!  We take off for a night on the town.  First we stop at Simon and Seafort’s Happy Hour. We land a table in the bar by the windows overlooking the inlet.  The clouds lay low and gray you’d never know there were incredible mountain vistas hiding.  We don’t mind, the inlet is still a fun place to watch.  We try various Happy Hour drinks and hors d’oeuvres.  Everything is very delicious.  We stop in midtown to check out the Eastern European grocery store that includes Russian, Ukrainian, Croatian specialties.  We drive back downtown and walk to the Polar Gift Store to pick up a couple more souvenirs.  We end the night at the top of the Captain Cook Hotel at the Crow’s Nest bar.  Very fancy with beautiful views looking east over the city toward the Chugach Mountains.  The weather is brightening with patches of blue skies.  We have a couple drinks and nibbles while enjoying the views. Back to the apartment getting ready for the Alaska State Fair tomorrow.  Dean’s first state fair!  Night.
